Buck Wild Brewing Kölsch (Golden Ale)

Gluten Free Kölsch

Welcome back to what appears to be the 180th review on BestGlutenFreeBeers.com! Can’t believe it? Neither can I. Anywho, today’s review is for the Buck Wild Brewing Kölsch (Golden Ale) brewed in Oakland, California.

Buck Wild Brewing Kolsch 3

This hasn’t always been the case, but Buck Wild Brewing now has their own brewery which means the entire brewhouse and tasting room is dedicated gluten free. Woohoo! They currently brew 4 year-round beers including a Pale Ale, an Amber Ale, an IPA (a rotating series, I believe) and this Kölsch. The Buck Wild Kölsch is brewed in millet, rice and buckwheat and enjoys a 5.1% ABV.

Feast your eyes on the pour video below to see how this gluten free Kölsch pours.  Kölsch’s usually prefer a stange glass but I don’t have one, so pilsner glass it is.

The Taste Test

Buck Wild Kolsch

The Buck Wild Brewing Kölsch has an absolutely dreamy pour. It has a perfectly clear light-gold color and the most frosty looking head. Its clarity is off the charts and the carbonation dance is mouth watering. The head lasts for a really long time, and leaves a thin layer of foam behind for some time after it bubbles down.

The aroma is wonderful, filled with bready malts and a crisp sweetness. Its flavor mirrors this quality and adds a bit of hop flower bite to the palate. This Buck Wild Golden Ale is light on the bitterness, heavy on the texture, and full of flavor. Body is light, drinking is easy.

When you take your first sip of this gluten free Kölsch, you first notice a bright and clean malt flavor accompanied by a perfectly crisp texture from the carbonation. The malt profile is bread-heavy and well balanced by the texture of the fizz and the herbal quality of the hops. There’s a bit of honey sweetness to this gluten free Golden Ale, but overall it lives on the drier side.

Half-way through the glass, the beer still has some foam at the top of the glass, and the carbonation continues its display. The visual appearance of this Kölsch is 10/10 in my opinion. It’s a sexy beer.
But looks only go so far, so I’ll continue on to say that this gluten free Golden Ale by Buck Wild Brewing is the complete package. It presents well, smells amazing, and tastes delicious. It’s a triple threat.

Buck Wild Brewing Kolsch

If you’ve been following me for any length of time, you know I gravitate towards the hop bombs and heavy beers—but this is hands down my favorite offering by Buck Wild Brewing. I’m crushin’ hard.
I decided to drive one of these Golden babies over to my friend Randy’s house (because he’s a pro beer judge and this is what we do for fun) because I wanted to know what he thought of this gluten free Kölsch in the spectrum of gluten-full Kolschs. The Answer: He LOVED it.

So well done Buck Wild Brewing, you’re officially the first gluten free brewery to make me crave a Kölsch! I highly recommend everyone in California track down this beer, you won’t regret it.
I’ve reviewed a few different Buck Wild Brewing beers in the past several weeks. Be sure to catch up on the review for the Buck Wild Pale Ale and the Buck Wild Amber Ale too!
