Divine Millsner: A Gluten Free “Pilsner”

Gluten Free Premium Bohemian Lager

Today I’m reviewing a new release from Divine Science Brewing and I think a lot of you are going to be excited about it. This review is for the Divine Millsner, a gluten free beer that seeks to mimic a Premium Bohemian Lager.

This beer is brewed by Divine Science Brewing in Southern California and has completely gluten free ingredients. True to its style, the Divine Millsner is a single malt, single hop lager. You can probably guess from the name of the beer that the malt used is millet. The hop used is Czech Saaz.

The Divine Millsner packs a 4.8% ABV and a 15 IBU. This beer is packaged in 16 ounce cans and has fairly limited distribution in Southern California. If you’re looking for specific locations where you can find this beer, I’d recommend visiting the Divine Science Brewing website or contacting them directly.

This is my fourth review of Divine Science. At the end of this review you will find links for their others including the Third Contact IPA, the Event Horizon Blonde Ale, and the Moka Diosa Stout. In the meantime, here is the pour for today’s Divine Millsner…(I think you’re really going to like it!)

The Taste Test

Divine Millsner – Gluten Free Lager

As you can see in the video above, the Divine Millsner pours beautifully and with an extremely generous head. The head stuck around for some time while I finished up the pour and took photos, and even 10 minutes later there’s still a healthy 1/4” of fine foam resting at the top of the beer. Let’s just say…she’s an attractive one.

The Divine Millsner has a vibrant gold color and high clarity which allows you to enjoy the carbonation dance long after the pour. Once the head bubbles down, you begin to notice the classic lager aroma. The bready character of the millet malt takes center stage.

The flavor profile of this gluten free lager is exactly what you might expect. It’s clean, light-ish on the palate, and malt-forward in every way. The carbonation feels lighter than it visually presents, and there is substantial body to this light(er) beer. Its body and malt-heavy quality gives the beer a silky smooth texture that sort of coats the mouth after swallow. No bitterness. Perhaps a wee bit of spice character from the hops though.

When the beer first hits your lips, your first impression is of its smooth texture and toasted malt. The Millsner gets a bit brighter as it moves through the palate–but not lighter, as this is where the beer’s body begins to shine. It finishes crisp and clean, but with plenty of flavor and texture character remaining behind on the palate.

This is an absolutely LOVELY Premium Bohemian Lager and I think it does it’s inspiration (the Czech Premium Pilsner) proud. I would highly recommend this beer for MOST people as I know you all miss your lagers and this may be one of the best gluten free ones out there!

Cheers!
