30,000 Feet IPA by Otherwise Brewing

Gluten Free India Pale Ale

This is my third review for San Francisco’s Otherwise Brewing. If you missed the first two, I’ll attach links to them at the end of this article. But today’s focus is their 30,000 Feet Juicy IPA. Just like the others, it’s packaged in a 16 ounce can and is brewed with completely gluten free ingredients.

The 30,000 Feet IPA has a 6.4% ABV and features both El Dorado and Strata hops. The latter of which is actually the root inspiration for this IPA. Otherwise Brewing says that they were inspired by the “stratospheric flavor of the Strata hop”, which they decided to round off with El Dorado. Its fermentables include rice malt and millet malt.

This gluten free juicy IPA is a part of Otherwise Brewing’s flagship series, so if you love it, you won’t have to say goodbye for a season. Since they are one of the newest gluten free breweries on the west coast, I’d be especially excited to hear from all of YOU. What do you think of their beers? If you’re in Central California, add it to your treasure hunt list.

Below is a video of 30,000 Feet’s beer pour. This is the first review of the year that I was able to film outside in the sunshine! Keep reading to find the rundown and links to additional offerings from this gluten free brewery.

The Taste Test

30,000 Feet Juicy IPA

This gluten free IPA pours with a great head and an orange agua fresca color. It’s pretty hazy as you can see in the photos below. The head bubbled down eventually and left a surface covering of bubbles behind. The aroma is absolutely bursting with tropical fruit.

When I take my first sip of the 30,000 Feet Juicy IPA, there’s a competition between the fruitiness and the bitterness on my tongue. Those are the first two qualities I notice, and the crisp carbonation is the third. The tropical fruit aroma is only matched by the flavor, but despite the heavy presence of fruit, this IPA finishes dry and crisp, with plenty of lingering bitterness.

The fruit flavors are soaked in pineapple, orange, and lemon. The bitterness if firm, but not overwhelming. Its juiciness is thirst quenching and the medium body is perfect for carrying the hops through the palate. I don’t have a whole lot to say about the malt, as I’m just not noticing it a whole lot.

This is a solid gluten free juicy IPA. I really like it. In fact, it may be my favorite Otherwise Brewing beer that I’ve reviewed thus far! (But there’s a stout in the lineup too, so watch out JIPA…) I’m noticing this beer was brewed several months ago too, so I can only imagine how good it is fresh off the tap. The cans are preserving the hop character quite well though.

If you happen to live in or be visiting Central California, I highly recommend sourcing some of these brews for your own little tasting party. Otherwise Brewing presents another great option for gluten free beer lovers.
