I’m pretty excited about finally getting my hands on some Lakefront Brewery beer. They are not a dedicated gluten free brewery, but they do offer two 100% gluten free ales: the New Grist Pilsner and the New Grist Ginger Ale. (They also do a line of Organic beers–which I LOVE! But they aren’t gluten free…[sigh]…oh well.)
I haven’t has much luck with ginger ales thus far. Every one I’ve tried yet tastes more like a sugary soda than a refreshing ale. But I’m all in. I’m ready to give Lakefront Brewery a fair shot at this. ;)
The Taste Test
New Grist Ginger Ale
The New Grist Ginger Ale pours with a nice head that sticks around for the long haul (and I poured it soft too!) which you can see for yourself on the @glutenfreebeers Instagram. The carbonation is audible and is making me thirsty…
It smells of sweet ginger, and has a cloudy yellow color. You can’t see through this one quite as well as we could see through the Pilsner. (Seriously…their Pilsner is so clear, we can literally READ through it.)
I think this is the best gluten free ginger style ale I’ve ever tried. Why? Because it actually tastes like a Ginger ALE…not a ginger soda (like the Hollows & Fentimans Ginger Beer). This ginger actually has a little spice to it and the beer isn’t actually very sweet.
I just have to note something. This beautiful frothy head will just. not. quit. Seriously, every sip I take of this brew gives me a beer mustache of creamy little micro bubbles. What a treat.
Anyway…back to the taste. This flavorful and light-bodied ale is brewed from rice, sorghum, and ginger. It contains a refreshing balance of sweet, spicy, and tart, without allowing any one to overtake the other. I think this is my favorite Lakefront Brewery offering yet!
The New Grist Ginger Ale has a 4.7% ABV, and is sold in 12 ounce bottles. Check out their website for more distribution info and retail locations.
