Gluten Free Ginger Beer From Harriott’s Legacy

I don’t know what’s going on, but all of a sudden there are ginger beers all over my fridge! This one is called the Islander Ginger Beer from Harriott’s Legacy. It’s brewed and bottled by Thomas Creek Brewery in South Carolina.

Ginger beers have a huge range in my experience. The range I’m referring to is sweetness. I recognize that some people like their ginger beers on the sweeter side, like a soda. Others like it hot (ginger hot) and dry. I would fancy myself on the drier end of that spectrum, just so my bias is clear. Ha!

This gluten free ginger beer is brewed on cane sugar, ginger, citrus, and Caribbean spices. It has a 5% ABV and is currently packaged in 12 ounce bottles. Below is the pour video for the Islander Ginger Beer…

The Taste Test

Islander Ginger Beer

The Islander Ginger Beer pours with a yellow color and no head. Carbonation is evident during the pour, but afterwards it mellows out or is otherwise hidden by the hazy nature of the ginger beer. Its aroma is extremely sweet to me and packed with ginger. My first impressions of its flavor is that it is heavy on the ginger, light on the carbonation, and medium-high on the sweetness scale.

When the Islander Ginger Beer first hits your tongue you’re greeted with a bit of fizzy texture and lots and lots of ginger. The sweetness lands in the middle of the tongue and fades out slowly. After swallow, you’re left with a beat of heat on the tongue and throat from the ginger.

The tasting experience starts light and crisp, transforms into sweet, and then leaves behind heat. The warmness of the ginger is my favorite quality of this brew so I’m glad they were generous with its presence.

At 5% ABV, this ginger beer would be perfect for direct consumption, or as a cocktail mixer. It’s a bit on the sweet side for me to mix with liquor (I’m super sensitive to liquor in sugar drinks) but I did make a lovely cocktail with the Harriot’s Legacy Hard Lemonade, which you can scope below!

This beer is available in the midwest/east coast so I’d love to hear from my audience to the east…do you like the Islander Ginger Beer? Is it too sweet? Too spicy? Or just right? What’s your favorite way to drink it?

If you feel like chatting, drop a note below. Until next time!
