10-09 German Pilsner by Rolling Mill Brewing

Gluten Free German Pilsner

A couple posts back I released the first Best Gluten Free Beers review for Ohio’s Rolling Mill Brewing Company. It was for their Two Goldens American Lager. So today it’s time to move on to their 10-09 German Pilsner. (They also have a gluten free Pale Ale, which I will review next!)

I chose to taste this style second because Pilsners are a bit more rare in the gluten free market. They’re out there, but certainly fewer and further between than other lighter styles such as lagers and blondes.

Rolling Mill Brewing 10-09 German Pilsner

Like all of Rolling Mill Brewing’s beers, the 10-09 German Pilsner is brewed with gluten free ingredients in a dedicated gluten free facility. This Celiac-safe brewery happens to be the only one of its kind in Ohio–for now at least. Hopefully that will change one day.

The German Pilsners is a style adapted from Czech Pilsners to better accommodate Germany’s domestic hop varieties and mineral water. It is often lighter in body and color, but with a higher carbonation.

The 10-09 Pilsner was named after the founders wedding anniversary (October 2009), which means these two have been married for almost 12 years—so cheers to that! This gluten free Pilsner has a 4.9% ABV and 38 IBU.

Like all their other flagships, it’s packaged in 16 ounce cans and served on tap at the brewery. Watch the video below to see what the beer looks like when poured. Keep reading to find my review of it.

The Taste Test

10-09 German Pilsner

The 10-09 German Pilsner pours with a bright golden yellow color and a lovely head that sticks around through about half of the pour video. This gluten free pilsner’s clarity is off the charts, and the carbonation appears steady after the pour.

It smells light, crisp, and clean, an aroma heavier in malt than hops. My first sip mirrors the aroma with an extremely light body and very mild flavor. It’s a bit softer than I thought it would be, with a mild carbonation level and no bitterness.

When the 10-09 German Pilsner first hits your lips, you notice the malt character first. Then a bit of gentle carbonation by mid palate, with a dry—and incredibly light—toasty malt finish. This gluten free Pilsner is as easy-drinking as it gets, particularly for those who love wafer-light bodies and little-to-no bitterness in their beers. It nails the light body of a classic German Pilsner, but the carbonation is a bit milder than I expected for this style.

Overall, this is a delicious and refreshing German Pilsner that would make the perfect companion for a summer day, or maybe even a lunch beer. :) I recommend tasting it if given the opportunity. Good luck though! It took me 5 years to get my Oregon hands on these Rolling Mill Brewing Co. beers…they’ve been open since 2016!

If you HAVE been lucky enough to taste them, be sure to drop a comment below to tell me what you thought of them. Which was your favorite? Any taproom exclusives that won you over you now wish to tease me with?

Also, be sure to check out the first review I published for Rolling Mills Brewing. It’s for their Two Goldens American Lager which is another one of their packaged flagship beers. Stay tuned for the review of their Anti-Federalist American Pale Ale. It’s next in line!
