Mutantis Brewery Deep Blonde Ale

100% Gluten Free Blonde Ale

This is a bit of a bonus review. I wasn’t planning to actually review this beer, but I just couldn’t help myself! Today I’m going to show you the gluten free Deep Blonde Ale brewed by Mutantis Brewery and Bottle Shop in Portland, OR.

Mutantis Brewery is one of the newest dedicated gluten free breweries out there. Founded by one of Ghostfish Brewery’s co-founders (and head brewers), Mutantis strives to be a one-stop shop for gluten free beer drinkers in Oregon. It’s their mission to carry every Oregon-brewed gluten free beer possible.

Mutantis also has a passion for experimentation. Small batches. Constantly rotating. Packaged in twistees. No distribution. The best way to experience Mutantis is in person, and I absolutely can’t wait to step foot in there myself.

Here’s is the pour for Mutantis Brewery’s Deep Blonde Ale. Keep reading to learn about my tasting experience. At the end of the review, you’ll find links to some other Mutantis Brewery beers too!

The Taste Test

Deep Blonde Ale

The first big shocker of the pour was the color for me. I really expected something a bit “blonder” when I popped this Twistee! The Deep Blonde Ale pours soooo deep…this is a dark blonde ale for sure. In fact, its color resembles a brownish amber. When you hold it up to the light it looks like a strawberry blonde! (Like me.)

The head is fantastic and 15 minutes later, it’s still there. The carbonation appears strong but we’ll have to taste to be sure. Once the majority of the head bubbles down, it leaves behind a micro film of frosty bubbles at the top, giving this Deep Blonde a solid 10/10 in visual appeal.

Maybe it’s because the head absolutely refuses to quit, or maybe this is a light aroma blonde to begin with, but I don’t pick up much on the nose. Just the lightest bit of toasted malt—but barely.
This beer tastes like an amber ale met a blonde he loved and made a beer baby. The Mutantis Deep Blonde Ale definitly tastes like an amber blonde to me.

When you sip, the gluten free malts present first. They’re light with a hint of toast and caramel. Next you notice the texture, which rocks a moderate carbonation and a medium body. It finishes with a touch of honey sweetness and a very light hop presence.

Overall this gluten-free deep blonde ale is nothing like what I expected it to be. And that’s not a bad thing at all. This is a very creative blonde ale that really pushes the style to a new edge.
Mutantis deep blonde ale drinks light yet holds a substantial mouth feel at the same time. My absolute favorite part of this gluten-free Blonde Ale is how it presents visually. It is epically beautiful…and I do not use that term lightly. This is a very good looking beer.

It’s light on the hops for those who prefer it. Definitely more malt in the flavor than hops. It also has very high clarity, which I forgot to point out earlier. Now that the beer is drinking down a bit, I do notice a bit more of an aroma. The nose is malt dominant, with a bit of caramel sweetness.

As always, Mutantis has released another unique and boundary-pushing brew that is 100% safe for Celiacs and all I want to tell him is: Keep doing it!
